- Art Redux: August 3th - 7th for rising 6th - 9th graders : 9am - 12pm
This class will focus on how to re-purpose materials that would otherwise be thrown away into art. The unique design of this class is that my session with rising 6 to 9th graders will create the base of a project that a younger group in the afternoon session, led by artist and instructor, Linda Simpson, will embellish. Class Descriptions:
Painted Furniture Workshop Goes to the Animals - $99 :
Three local artists teach a painted furniture workshop to create pieces for the Independent Animal Rescue Annual Auction, which benefits thousands of animals in the Triangle. Well-known Durham artists Emily Weinstein, Kathryn DeMarco, and Paula MacLeod show how to prepare furniture for application and explain faux finishes, mosaic and collage techniques. Participants then create works of art out of ordinary, household furniture. Most materials are supplied but a short materials list will be provided.
A piece of furniture will be provided for each student to use for class and this piece will then be donated to Independent Animal Rescue. This is a non-profit organization that receives no public funds. Finished furniture will be auctioned at the Independent Animal Rescue Auction later this year. An introductory meeting and furniture pickup will be held on Wednesday, April 22, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Northgate Mall. Course/Project Descriptions
Mosaic Survey
I will cover how to cut stained glass, plates and tiles, smalti, and vitreous tiles. We will discuss how to find and use the necessary tools, different surfaces (wood, concrete, plastic, etc), techniques (indirect/direct), adhesives, and how to decide what surfaces/materials/adhesives are best for indoor versus outdoor projects. It is a three hour class. $90 ( Note: Multi student discount does not apply for this class)
Direct method -- pique assiette (broken plate) Indoor
In this class you will learn the basics of breaking plates and tiles with a hammer and more precisely with tile nippers. I will also cover proper adhesives and grouting. This class is recommended if you are interested in learning how to handle projects for inside your home (flower pots, floors, counters, table tops, mirrors, trivets etc.).
Direct Method -- pique assiette (broken plate) Outdoor
This class also covers plate-breaking techniques. However, in this class we will focus on adhesives for outdoor use. This class is recommended for anyone interested in learning how to handle outdoor projects (flower pots, bird baths, exterior walls, stepping stones, etc.)
Direct Method -- Stained/Vitreous Glass Wall Mosaic
In this class I will cover basic stained/vitreous glass cutting so you can create your own design. We will work on pre-treated plywood, finish the edges, and install the hangers for a beautiful wall hanging.
Direct method -- Smalti Wall Mosaic
In this class I will cover basic smalti tools and cutting techniques so you can create your own design. We will work on pre-treated plywood, finish the edges, and install the hangers for a beautiful wall hanging. Grout is generally not used when using Smalti, thus the spacing between pieces is very small and precise cutting is required. Therefore, it is suggested that you take a pique assiette or vitreous class first. Also note that smalti classes willtend to be longer in duration due to the fact that such precision is needed for cutting.
Indirect method -- Stained Glass Stepping Stones
In this class I will cover basic stained glass cutting so you can create your own design. After your design is complete, we will use molds and pour our own concrete. Some concrete colors will be available. (It is suggested that you take a direct method class before trying to tackle the indirect method.
